Billions of dollars in net inflows arrived at leveraged single-stock exchange-traded funds during a chip sector sell-off, even as those funds were falling sharply. A leveraged single-stock ETF is a product that multiplies the daily price change of one individual stock, meaning it drops faster than the underlying name in a downturn and rises faster in a rally. Buyers kept arriving throughout the decline. That trade has a name in markets: catching a falling knife.

The phrase describes buying into an asset that is still in active decline, on the expectation that prices are approaching a floor. The risk embedded in the name is that falling assets do not stop because a buyer decides it is time.

Net inflows are the gap between fresh cash entering a fund and cash leaving it. When that number runs positive during a price slump, it means new buyers are absorbing shares from sellers and adding more on top, despite the losses already on the table. The funds in question showed billions of dollars on that side of the ledger while their prices were moving against the buyers.

The structure of these products makes the math unforgiving in a downturn. Single-stock leverage concentrates all the exposure in one company's daily moves, with a multiplier applied on top. A broad chip sector sell-off put pressure on the underlying stocks those funds track. The leveraged layer amplified that pressure. Investors buying in were entering positions built to drop faster than the sector already was.

The logic for buying anyway runs like this: if the sector recovers, leveraged buyers stand to capture a multiple of the rebound. That is what makes the falling-knife trade appealing enough to attract billions even during a plunge. The payoff, if right, is outsized.

Whether the bet was well-timed is not something the inflow data settles. What it confirms is that falling prices did not slow the buying. For a large pool of investors, the decline was the point.
