Executives at Micron and Samsung stated this week that the memory shortage will persist for at least the next couple of years. Sanjay Mehrotra, the chief executive officer of Micron, told investors that demand for the company's memory products is expected to exceed available supply over that period.
Micron does not currently sell consumer RAM. Mehrotra's comments specifically address the company's business-to-business sales of high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, used in artificial intelligence, and DRAM for servers. Nevertheless, his remarks carry implications for consumer devices.
Manufacturing capacity is currently prioritizing memory production for AI and servers. This strategic shift limits the supply of memory manufactured for consumer devices, extending the effects of the shortage beyond enterprise hardware.
