The Trump administration removed 14 security, privacy, and transparency requirements for vendors of electronic health records on Monday. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology issued a final rule aimed at streamlining government regulations and supporting the development of new technologies.

The change eliminated 14 of the 60 criteria used to approve electronic record-keeping systems sold by companies such as Epic and Oracle. Seven additional criteria were significantly altered in the same rule.

The administration made these changes over the objections of commenters. Those commenters raised concerns that the modifications would undermine the security and privacy of sensitive health information. They also expressed worry that the changes could compromise efforts to ensure the safety of products that rely on artificial intelligence.
