Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) is examining whether the three largest pharmacy benefit managers increased audit pressure on independent pharmacies in response to their support for specific legislation. Comer, who leads the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent letters to CVS Caremark, OptumRx, and Express Scripts late last week. In these letters, he alleged that independent pharmacies faced an unusual spike in burdensome audits after many publicly endorsed the bill he introduced last year. The proposed measure, called the Pharmacists Fight Back Act, is a bipartisan bill. It would require pharmacy benefit managers in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program to reimburse pharmacies fairly for the actual cost of medicines. The bill also requires these companies to pay a reasonable fee for dispensing drugs.
