College football is back for a full weekend, and for Arch Manning, the opener in Austin arrives with real weight behind it. Texas hosts Texas State in what the sport calls a guarantee game, meaning the smaller school accepts a fee to travel to a larger stadium and likely absorb a loss in exchange for money that funds its athletic program. Manning's first year as Texas's starting quarterback raised questions this game cannot answer alone, but it starts the clock.

What Manning's numbers actually showed

The raw totals from Manning's debut season look fine at a glance: 26 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and 3,163 passing yards. The problem was accuracy. He completed just 61.4% of his passes, a figure well below what you would expect from a player projected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. A location split made the concern harder to ignore. At home in Austin, Manning completed 65% of his throws and accounted for 19 of those 26 touchdowns, with only two interceptions. On the road, both numbers fell. Texas came into last season ranked No. 1 in the country. The year ended with a loss in the College Football Playoff, and head coach Steve Sarkisian's public explanation was that the team was tired.

The team crossing the field

Texas State arrives at 7-6 from last year, led again by quarterback Brad Jackson. His 2024 numbers were genuinely solid: 71% completion rate, 21 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and 3,224 yards. The best team Texas State faced last season was probably Arizona State; they closed the year against Rice in a bowl game. Greg Burrell steps in as the primary running back after averaging 6.7 yards per carry in 2024, though he scored only three touchdowns.

The gap in schedule strength between the two programs is real. Texas opened last season on the road at Ohio State and faces that same program at home next week. Texas State has not regularly played at that level. Saturday should reflect that difference.

What is less certain is by how much. Texas won only two games by more than 21 points all of last season despite carrying considerable talent. Manning is expected to play roughly half the game, and his efficiency against a lower-stakes opponent is the number to track. His draft standing as a projected first-overall pick stays a projection until the completion percentage rises to match it.
