Voluntary drug pricing agreements between the White House and midsize biotechnology companies are unlikely to change what most Americans pay for their prescriptions, at least in the near term, analysts say.
The agreements follow a most-favored-nation framework: the United States would pay prices for drugs comparable to what peer nations pay.
The deals apply chiefly to Medicaid, which already receives the lowest prices of any U.S. payer by law, while exempting companies from mandatory Medicare price reductions. President Trump announced the agreements Monday.
He has pursued drug pricing as a political priority and believes the issue will help Republicans in the midterm elections.
