A direct cash payment to every adult American, contingent on a November election outcome, is what President Donald Trump put on the table Wednesday night.
The payment, which Trump called a "dividend" (the word borrowed from investing, where a dividend is cash a company distributes to its shareholders out of profits), would total $5,000 per person.
It would only be issued if Republicans hold both the House and Senate after the 2026 midterm elections. Trump made the pledge during a nearly two-hour speech at the Republican Party's midterm convention in Dallas.
The proposal carries a price tag that could reach approximately $1.2 trillion, based on roughly 240 million adult citizens in the United States.
