A styling framework, the layer of code that governs how a website looks to a visitor, was at the center of a major acquisition this week.
Shopify (SHOP) bought Tailwind Labs, maker of Tailwind CSS, a tool installed more than 110 million times per week. Shares opened higher Wednesday on the announcement, then reversed to close September 9 down more than 5%.
The reach of Tailwind CSS gives the deal its weight.
The framework is part of the tech stack at ChatGPT, Cloudflare (NET), Reddit (RDDT), and X, and Shopify says it was already a significant part of its own infrastructure before the purchase.
