Plague death revives scrutiny of Russian bioweapons program

The unexplained death of a researcher at the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East has intensified scrutiny of Russia's biological weapons capabilities.

Marshall Billingslea, a former staffer for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and President Donald Trump's special presidential envoy for arms control, stated that the incident raises concerns about the scope of the Soviet-era program that Russia inherited.

Billingslea told Fox News Digital that he learned the extent of the Soviet apparatus from Ken Alibek, a former senior official in the Soviet biological weapons program.

Alibek described the scale of the program as "mammoth" and detailed efforts to alter pathogens to make them more lethal or difficult to treat.
