Oil prices fall as Saudi supply hopes outweigh fresh Houthi strikes

Oil prices fell on Friday as Saudi Arabia signaled additional crude would come to market, and traders decided that news mattered more than fresh Houthi strikes.

Crude, the industry shorthand for unrefined oil before it reaches a refinery, is the input that sits behind every barrel of gasoline and diesel; when traders fear the supply of it will shrink, prices for those end products tend to move in the same direction.

Two pressures were at work through Friday's session, pointing in opposite directions.

Houthi strikes carry the threat of what traders call a supply disruption: a break or slowdown in the chain that moves crude from producing countries to the refineries that need it.
