Novartis secures Abogen mRNA autoimmune deal for $575 million

Novartis has agreed to pay $575 million upfront to Abogen Biosciences, a Chinese company, for the rights to an experimental mRNA therapy targeting autoimmune diseases.

The transaction marks another recent example of a major pharmaceutical firm sourcing new treatments from China to replenish its development pipeline.

In a separate finding, a STAT analysis reports that the National Institutes of Health exhausted the $34 billion allocated by Congress for research grants in the 2026 fiscal year.

Despite this full expenditure, the study notes that a slower and more opaque funding process is now complicating the actual conduct of scientific research.
