A closely watched drug for a common heart disease risk factor has failed in its biggest test.
Pelacarsen, developed by Novartis, targets Lp(a), a particle made from lipids and proteins whose elevated concentrations in the blood raise the likelihood of serious cardiac events.
Novartis said Friday the drug showed no benefit over a placebo in the Phase 3 HORIZON trial, a result the company described as a major blow.
What the trial actually showed Phase 3 is the final stage of large-scale clinical testing.
