Two leaders whose governments face significant Western economic pressure are asking a major bloc of economies to pull closer together.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned Western economic sanctions, meaning restrictions one country or group of countries places on another to cut off access to trade and financial systems, and called on the BRICS bloc to deepen economic cooperation among its members.
BRICS is a grouping of large economies that sit largely outside the traditional Western-led financial order.
When Pezeshkian and Putin addressed the bloc, their message was direct: members should strengthen trade and investment ties among themselves rather than depend on access to markets that both leaders argued have been turned into tools of political pressure.
