GOP splits over cash for new mothers as guaranteed income debate moves past party lines

A growing number of Republican lawmakers are backing guaranteed income programs for pregnant women and new mothers, even as their own party moves to ban them in at least five states.

Guaranteed income means giving families money with few or no conditions on how it gets spent.

The split is most visible in Michigan, where a Republican state senator publicly endorsed a program that his party's own oversight committee is currently investigating.

The Mother and Infant Cash Coalition was founded in 2023 to coordinate organizations that provide cash directly to families around the time of a child's birth.
