Google's AI divisions reshuffle as chief scientist Jeff Dean exits and Demis Hassabis steps down from DeepMind

A corporate reshuffle, meaning a reordering of who holds which executive roles and what each is responsible for, is underway at the top of Google's artificial intelligence operations.

The search giant announced Wednesday that Jeff Dean, its chief scientist, is exiting, and that Demis Hassabis is stepping down as chief executive of DeepMind, Google's AI research division.

The two moves arrived in a single announcement. The roles now changing hands Chief scientist is not a traditional management title.

The person in that role shapes a technology company's research agenda and is often the name that academic and engineering communities look to when assessing where an organization's technical priorities are pointed.
