A former NFL cornerback, the defensive position responsible for shadowing an opposing team's pass receivers, was found dead in a Florida community on Wednesday, hours after a Facebook post that read as a final goodbye.
A family member confirmed his death to OutKick but asked not to be identified; the official cause of death has not been determined.
The post, which the family believes Smith wrote before his death, moved through apology, confession, and what he described as a kind of theological explanation.
He wrote that he had tried to fight what he called demons that someone had placed inside him. He said he had needed help and had not gotten it. He addressed his children, telling them he was sorry.
