A new weekly injection for polycythemia vera, a rare chronic blood cancer that causes the body to overproduce red blood cells and thicken the blood, won Food and Drug Administration approval on Friday.
The drug is called rusfertide, developed by the biotech company Protagonist Therapeutics. Patients will receive it under the brand name Mimrylo, sold by Takeda, the Japanese pharmaceutical company.
