Farage wins Clacton by-election but parliamentary probe resumes

A sitting Member of Parliament resigned his own seat to force a public vote on his conduct, won that vote, and stepped back into a live parliamentary investigation within hours.

That process is called a by-election: a contest held to fill a single vacant seat outside a general election.

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, captured 22,239 votes in Clacton on Friday to secure his return to Westminster, while the standards inquiry into an undeclared £5 million payment resumed the same day.

The investigation concerns a gift of £5 million, roughly $6.75 million, from a billionaire cryptocurrency investor. Farage has acknowledged receiving the money but says he did nothing wrong by not declaring it.
