China loosens Nvidia H200 chip restrictions as AI race escalates

An export control is a government rule that restricts which goods can cross a border. Beijing has loosened its controls on Nvidia's H200 chips, permitting small shipments to enter the country.

The beneficiaries are China's leading technology companies, which are pushing to close the gap with American rivals in artificial intelligence. The H200 is a chip Nvidia produces for AI workloads.

Chinese companies had been restricted in how much of this hardware they could receive. Beijing's decision opens the door, but the key word is small.

Small shipments to a select group of companies are different from broad market access.
