Canada looks to Wall Street and the EU as Carney pushes economic diversification

Canada is making an investment pitch to American financiers and the European Union, with Prime Minister Mark Carney arguing the country needs to reduce its reliance on the United States as an economic partner.

Diversification, the concept at the center of this push, means spreading trade and investment ties across a wider range of relationships rather than concentrating them on one country.

Carney has been carrying that argument to two stages: a domestic investment forum known informally as "Maple Davos" and, most recently, Strasbourg.

The "Maple Davos" label borrows from Davos, the Swiss mountain town whose name has come to stand for the kind of concentrated forum where investors and political leaders meet to discuss global economic questions.
