When inflation figures land, the number the market watches most closely is not always the one that headlines lead with. Headline inflation captures every price change in the economy, energy costs included.
Core inflation, by contrast, strips out food and energy because those categories swing on supply disruptions that interest rate changes cannot easily fix.
The latest data showed the two measures pointing in different directions. Bitcoin ($BTC) and ether ($ETH) both rose.
Lewis Huang, an analyst at crypto exchange Bitget, named the split: headline inflation was accelerating on energy, while core inflation continued to ease.
