The commercial air taxi race has a new military dimension.
Archer, a maker of eVTOL aircraft (the abbreviation stands for electric vertical takeoff and landing, meaning aircraft that rise vertically like a helicopter and cruise under electric power), unveiled a military craft built alongside defense technology firm Anduril, while its chief executive reaffirmed what the company itself calls an "ambitious" target to begin commercial operations in 2028.
The two moves come as Archer and its eVTOL competitors are still navigating the FAA certification process that separates prototype flight from paying passengers.
The FAA certification hurdle FAA certification is the Federal Aviation Administration's formal finding that an aircraft design is safe to carry members of the public.
