Microsoft faces a critical test on Oct. 28 when it reports fiscal 2027 first-quarter earnings, as its cloud computing platform Azure shows signs of slowing relative to competitors. While Microsoft stock is up about 10% for the year, it trails the S&P 500, which has gained almost 13%, leaving investors uncertain if the tech giant can sustain its recent rally.
Microsoft's artificial intelligence strategy rests on three main pillars: Copilot, Azure, and its partnership with OpenAI. The OpenAI investment has generated significant returns, though a potential public offering for the AI lab is not expected until at least 2027. Copilot, Microsoft's generative AI tool integrated into its Office suite, has also shown strong momentum, crossing 30 million paid seats in the fiscal 2026 fourth quarter that ended June 30.
However, Azure remains the central driver of Microsoft's long-term growth. In the fiscal 2026 fourth quarter, Azure grew at a 43% rate, a slight acceleration from the 40% growth seen in the third quarter and 39% in the second quarter. Despite these solid figures, the growth rate has not continued to accelerate. This plateau is a concern because Azure's primary competitors are expanding much faster.
Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, operated by Alphabet, have both seen their cloud computing growth rates rise rapidly over the same period. Alphabet is scheduled to report its own results on Oct. 28, the same day as Microsoft, while Amazon will report on Oct. 29. If Microsoft's Azure continues to grow at a steady 40% while Amazon accelerates and Google Cloud reaches triple-digit growth rates, Microsoft stock could fall as investors re-evaluate its competitive position in the cloud infrastructure market.
The upcoming earnings reports could determine whether Microsoft remains a preferred holding in the cloud sector or if it loses market share to faster-growing rivals. A significant acceleration in Azure growth would likely boost investor confidence and drive the stock higher. Conversely, if growth remains flat against accelerating competitors, the stock may face downward pressure. Until Oct. 28, the market will watch closely to see if Microsoft can match the pace of its peers.
