Kieran Crowley, the communications manager for the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), clashed with Israeli journalists during a press conference in Serbia on Saturday. The confrontation occurred ahead of the Ireland versus Israel match in the Nations League. The exchange ended the press conference shortly after Crowley denied allegations that Irish players had made racist comments toward their Israeli counterparts. He stated, "That's completely untrue." The dispute followed an initial question from a journalist regarding Irish players' support for Palestinians after the Flydubai incident earlier that week. Crowley attempted to limit the discussion to football matters, stating they only wanted "football questions."
The Ireland and Israel teams met for the first time in the Nations League, with Ireland defeating Israel 3-0. The match took place only after Irish players voted on whether to proceed with the game. During the match, Irish players wore black armbands and refused to shake hands with Israeli players in protest.
Ireland has pressured the soccer team to boycott matches against Israel over the country's response to the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,000 Israelis. In June, the FAI relocated the fixture to a neutral site citing operational concerns. The initial game was hosted in Hungary, while the subsequent match was played in Serbia. In November, the FAI proposed a motion urging UEFA to ban Israel from club and international competition. Despite internal pressure, the FAI has resisted calls for a full boycott, arguing that such a move could result in UEFA sanctions.
