Hasan Piker's Mao-style suit at College Democrats convention draws over a million views and sharp backlash

A streaming personality appeared before college-age Democrats this weekend in what critics called a Mao suit, a collarless tunic style linked to Mao Zedong and long associated with Chinese Communist Party imagery. The clip crossed one million views after the account DSA Watch shared it and compared the speech to one by Adolf Hitler. Hasan Piker, who carries roughly 10 million followers across internet platforms, pushed back directly on that comparison on X.

What Piker said and wore

Piker addressed the 2026 College Democrats of America summer convention with a call to reject both what he called Trumpism and Democrats who, in his words, "compromise, conciliate, and betray." He also accused the party of funding ICE and Israel, cooperating with fascists, harming workers, and helping poison the planet. The crowd applauded.

The outfit drew as much attention as the words. DSA Watch labeled Piker's address a "Hitler style speech." Piker responded on X, arguing that criticizing Trumpism and Democratic collaboration with it bore no resemblance to anything Hitler said.

Responses from critics

Spencer Pratt, a former Los Angeles mayoral candidate and reality television personality, wrote on X that Piker was "brainwashing your kids at college" and that what was unfolding was "always communism." Pratt added that Mao had killed more people than Hitler and that communist iconography received insufficient public outrage by comparison.

Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, said on X that Piker had previously called Mao "one of the great leaders of this world who changed the entire universe" and described the appearance as part of an attempt at a "cultural takeover" of the Democratic Party. GOP strategist Matt Whitlock called the choice of outfit "a little on the nose."

Scott Jennings, a CNN political commentator, wrote on X that being a leftist in good standing seemed to require considerable "costumery." Piker's team did not respond to a request for comment.

The fault line inside the party

A College Democrats of America Executive Board member at a New York college told Fox News Digital that "platforming someone like Hasan Piker is antithetical to the party that common sense democrats are trying to present to the American people before November's midterms." The board member said the party had a clear opportunity to contrast itself with Trump and warned that associating with Piker would damage electability among average voters.

Piker has endorsed multiple far-left candidates, including Abdul El-Sayed, who ran for Senate in Michigan. Earlier this year, a clip now recirculating showed Piker saying he would never criticize Mao Zedong and calling him one of the great leaders of the world. Historians estimate that Mao's policies contributed to the deaths of tens of millions of people.
