Referral traffic is the stream of visitors a website earns when someone clicks a link on another platform. The phrase "10 blue links" describes the traditional Google results page: a ranked list of hyperlinks pointing to outside websites. Each link is a direct path to a destination. Click the link, visit the site. That model created a steady stream of referrals for every domain that appeared on the page.
AI Overviews change that interaction. The feature presents a generated text summary at the top of the results, drawn from sources around the web. A user who finds the answer they came for in that summary has no reason to click further. Huffman's argument is that the summary cannot replicate what the link did, because the summary keeps the user inside Google's environment rather than sending them out to the original source.
What Huffman said, and what remains open
Huffman said Reddit is working to find ways around the changes at Google. He described Google as delivering less traffic to Reddit than it had before. That is the substance of what was said publicly. Why the gap between content and credit matters
