Dave & Buster's Entertainment, Inc. (PLAY) shares have risen about 7.7% over the past month, outperforming the S&P 500, following a second-quarter fiscal 2026 report in which earnings and revenues missed analyst expectations. The company posted an adjusted loss per share of 27 cents, a significant miss from the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 19 cents of earnings per share. This result marked a sharp deterioration from the year-ago quarter, when the company reported adjusted earnings of 40 cents per share.

Quarterly revenues totaled $544.1 million, falling 3.1% below the consensus estimate of $561 million and declining 2.4% year over year. The revenue shortfall was driven by an 8.8% year-over-year drop in entertainment revenues, which fell to $332.6 million from $364.5 million in the prior year period. Entertainment activities account for 61.1% of the company's quarterly revenues. Conversely, food and beverage revenues increased 9.6% year over year to $211.5 million, up from $192.9 million, representing 38.9% of total revenues. Management attributed the food and beverage growth to enhanced menu offerings and eat-and-play combo initiatives that supported higher food attach rates.

Profitability metrics contracted significantly during the period. Operating income amounted to $19.4 million, down from $53 million in the year-ago quarter, causing the operating margin to shrink to 3.6% from 9.5%. Total cost of products rose to $83.2 million from $76.4 million, while operating payroll and benefits increased to $140.2 million from $138.7 million. Other store operating expenses jumped to $192.9 million from $186.9 million, and depreciation and amortization climbed to $73.7 million from $65.2 million. Consequently, adjusted EBITDA declined to $98.9 million from $129.8 million in the year-earlier period, with the margin dropping to 18.2% from 23.3%.

Comparable store sales, including Dave & Buster's and Main Event locations, declined 2.9% year over year. While comparable store revenues fell by $15.3 million, this was partially offset by a $14.2 million increase in noncomparable store revenues. Management noted that overall same-store sales improved during July and continued to improve during the fiscal third quarter to date.

For the first six months of fiscal 2026, net cash provided by operating activities totaled $160.6 million, an increase from $129.8 million in the prior-year period. Capital expenditures decreased to $190 million from $243.8 million a year ago, resulting in adjusted free cash flow that improved to positive $19.5 million from negative $36.5 million in the first six months of fiscal 2025.

As of August 4, 2026, the company held $16 million in cash and cash equivalents, compared with $16.6 million as of February 3, 2026. Long-term debt, net, stood at approximately $1.50 billion compared with $1.52 billion at the end of fiscal 2025, keeping the net total leverage ratio at 3.5 times at quarter-end. The company reported available liquidity of $492.1 million and stated it was in compliance with its debt covenants.

During the fiscal second quarter, Dave & Buster's opened six new domestic stores and ended the period with 250 company-owned locations internationally, with six franchise stores open and at least one more expected during the remainder of fiscal 2026.

Analyst sentiment has turned negative following the report, with Zacks Investment Research assigning the stock a Rank #5 (Strong Sell). The consensus estimate has shifted down by 6.83% due to downward revisions in estimates over the past month.
