A general manager in college football controls roster decisions, staff hires, and how the organization runs above the coaching level. Bill Belichick, the 74-year-old head coach at the University of North Carolina, told the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that his 25-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson does not hold that role inside his program, pushing back against months of reporting that she has been running things there.
What the email actually showed
The story started with an email. Belichick had written to staff asking that requests for his personal appearances be forwarded to Hudson. That email circulated publicly, and what followed bore little resemblance to what it actually said, in his telling.
The context he offered: when he took the North Carolina job in December, he was simultaneously juggling five television programs, a radio show, and a book. Hudson was handling scheduling for those outside commitments. Nothing in the email touched football operations at UNC.
He described the coverage to the Journal as "a long way from" what actually happened. The specific version he called out: reporting that she was "trying to be the general manager of the team." He called that "so ridiculous."
He also rejected a second claim, that Hudson is copied on every email he receives. "That's just a flat-out lie," he told the Journal.
Hudson separately submitted public records requests to UNC seeking any communications between journalists and university employees that mentioned the two of them. Belichick described those as asking for materials that had already been released elsewhere.
What else is happening at North Carolina
Those questions about Hudson's role have run alongside a separate investigation into the culture of the Tar Heels football program. During that period, Belichick's son stepped down from his position as North Carolina's defensive coordinator. Belichick did not address the investigation in the Journal interview.
Hudson had largely stayed out of public view through the early weeks of the season. She attended her first game last weekend, when North Carolina beat East Tennessee State 35-3 to improve to 2-0.
