Egg freezing, the process of retrieving and storing a woman's unfertilized eggs for potential future use, moved to the center of a political argument Saturday when Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she is undergoing the procedure. The New York Democrat shared the news in a series of Instagram Story videos, saying she had spent years weighing the decision and saving for it. She connected the personal choice to what she called a worsening political climate for women under the Trump administration.
Why she went public
Ocasio-Cortez, who was first elected to Congress at 28, said serving in office young meant navigating major life decisions in public. She wanted to help normalize conversations about fertility, perimenopause, menopause, and conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, known as PCOS. Women, she said, are largely untaught about their own bodies and the planning options available to them.
She acknowledged undergoing the procedure is a financial privilege and noted that technological advances have made it more accessible than it once was. She also said she expected a political cost to going public, arguing that female politicians face a level of scrutiny around marriage and family planning that their male counterparts typically do not.
Her critique of the Trump administration
Ocasio-Cortez did not stop at the personal. She said the current administration has "made pregnancy more dangerous than probably at any point in the last 30-plus years" and framed the announcement as reclaiming control over her reproductive choices.
She said she plans to document parts of the process on social media, including the hormone injections required in the weeks before egg retrieval. She had already filmed herself unboxing her medications and administering her first shot. Before an appearance on an ABC morning show, she said she planned to give herself one of those injections in the green room.
The pushback
Andrew Kolvet, a spokesman for Turning Point USA, criticized the announcement on X. He argued it reflected what he called a progressive message that prioritizes career over family formation, and he connected it to declining fertility rates. Kolvet, who noted that Ocasio-Cortez turns 37 in the coming weeks and has been engaged to Riley Roberts since May 2022, described her decision as "a cautionary tale" rather than female liberation.
Ocasio-Cortez said she plans to administer a shot in the green room, walk out, and "talk about international events, domestic policy, elections." Her own summary of the moment: "Because women can do anything."
