Akre Capital Management, an investment management company, identified Mastercard Incorporated as a key holding in its Akre Focus ETF, citing the payment technology firm's position at the intersection of global commerce and artificial intelligence. The firm published its third-quarter 2026 investor letter, outlining why it maintains confidence in Mastercard despite broader market volatility and the fund's own performance challenges during the period.

The Akre Focus ETF declined 0.84% in the third quarter of 2026, a period in which the S&P 500 index gained 2.30%. This underperformance was driven largely by a 14.38% drop in September, which offset gains recorded in July and August. Over the trailing 12 months, the fund returned minus 21.80%, while the S&P 500 returned plus 15.74%. Akre Capital argues that its portfolio companies remain financially resilient, projecting mid-teens free-cash-flow growth, return on invested capital above 43%, and leverage levels lower than those of the S&P 500, even as valuations remain historically low.

In its letter, Akre Capital specifically addressed Mastercard Incorporated, which closed at $623.60 on October 23, 2026, with a market capitalization of $546.28 billion. The stock was up 9.23% year to date at that time, trading within a 52-week range of $464.52 to $633.29. Akre Capital stated that Mastercard and Visa are directing more transaction traffic to critical intersections in global commerce where value creation is accelerating. The letter noted that AI-powered agentic commerce introduces new risks and opportunities that require the orchestration of these dominant networks, a dynamic that will eventually apply to quantum computing as well.

According to Akre Capital, the strength of Mastercard's and Visa's networks suggests that potential competitors are more likely to partner with them than to compete directly. The investment firm highlighted tokenization technology as a key innovation, noting that it protects live payment credentials by using unique tokenized credentials to complete transactions. The letter reported that more than 50% of global e-commerce transactions are now tokenized, a shift associated with a 39% reduction in fraud and a 5% increase in authorization rates. Akre Capital observed that Visa and Mastercard have only begun monetizing this technology approximately a decade after its introduction.

Mastercard Incorporated ranks 11th on a list of the 40 most popular stocks among hedge funds heading into 2026. Data from the source indicates that 158 hedge fund portfolios held Mastercard shares at the end of the second quarter, up from 157 in the previous quarter. While Akre Capital remains confident in major holdings including Mastercard, Visa, Constellation Software, Brookfield, KKR, and Moody's, it acknowledged specific challenges at other portfolio companies such as LVMH, Copart, FICO, and CoStar.
